Seeds of Knowledge, 2024

Seeds of Knowledge: Carving Memories focuses on a selection of flora that is found across the coastline of South-east Queensland, heroing the Hibiscus, Frangipani, Native Guava, Ocean Pandanus, Banana Leaf, Rosella and Beauty Leaf Tree. This tropical landscape is reimagined through the process of relief-print carving, a practice that the artist has utilised as a way to connect to the threads of her Torres Strait Islander heritage. There is a play between native and introduced flora, aiming to highlight the different stories between Western and First Nations peoples that have been lost over time. As many visitors of Queensland State Archives may have travelled from far away to explore their history, the continuous change and growth that is seen within the work reflects the transient yet perpetual change of people within this institution. Each line carved represents a feeling, a memory, a relationship that entwines and evolves into something new.
