Complex Ecologies, 2018-2021

Complex Ecologies is a continued body of work that focuses on the minute aspects of both native and introduced flora in my immediate natural environment of Brisbane. I explore the intricate patterns and forms that are seen within an around the organic shapes and forms I come across in my day-today life. What is on the surface is just a glimpse into the complex ecologies that make up the natural world around us.

I develop an intimate experience with local flora as a way to create the organic patterns and forms seen in Complex Ecologies. The intricate patterns formed underneath the horizon line represent the complexity of nature. The simple form that is apparent above the surface demonstrates to the viewer that there is an underlying diversity and connection within the natural environment. What we might perceive as an isolated form, in reality reflects a narrative of interconnectivity. Using the play between these organic forms I represent my perception of nature, utilising printmaking as a tool to connect with nature on a personal level.

Complex Ecologies (2018) was acquired in 2021 by the ABC Network as part of the Artworks Program, hosted by Namila Benson. This artwork is featured in the talkshow room across a range of episodes, including Season 1 Episode 20, which follows the stories of Boys Swallows University, Murrniny & Ngaiire.
